The Highly Anticipated Comeback of the 60ft and 43ft Traditional Dhow Sailing Race

12 October 2023

Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC) is set to organize two major events for the latter half of October, featuring the highly anticipated first round of the 43ft and 60ft Dhow Sailing Races, as part of the 2023-2024 marine sports season.

Dubai's beaches will witness the first rounds of the Dubai Traditional Dhow Sailing Race (43ft) (the oldest race in the traditional category) on Saturday, the 21st of this month. The event is expected to bring together elite sailors and boat owners, marking a great start to the major events in these competitions.

One week later, on the following Saturday, the 28th of October, a grand event will be held, featuring the first round of the Dubai Traditional Dhow Sailing Race (60ft), the largest in traditional racing in terms of size and participation. This event serves as the opening round of the Dubai Championship, which includes three rounds: the first in October, the second in December, and the grand finale at the 33rd edition of the Al Gaffal Race next year.

The Board of Directors at the Dubai International Marine Club, under the leadership of Ahmad Saeed bin Meshar, has approved a total of seven races for the 60ft, 43ft, and 22ft Traditional Dhow Sailing Races as part of the new season 2023-2024. These races include three rounds for the 60ft Dhow Race, which encompasses the Al Gaffal Race, two rounds for the 43ft category, and two rounds for the 22ft category.

It's worth noting that the activities for the new season began successfully at the end of last month with the first round of the Dubai Traditional Dhow Sailing Race (22ft), which was divided into two categories for juniors under 16 years old and youth under 21 years old. More than 40 boats participated in the event, with boat number 77, "Zilzal," crowned as the winner in the youth category, while boat number 25, "Falah," claimed the title in the junior category.
