21 November 2023

Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC) is set to organize the first round of the Dubai Traditional Rowing Race for the 2023-2024 sports season this Saturday.

The highly anticipated race will unfold on the waters of Dubai Canal, near Al Jadaf Walk, opposite the Dubai Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, covering a race distance of up to 2.3 kilometres. The race venue offers a stunning view of Business Bay, the waterfront of Dubai Creek, and the natural surroundings.

The Dubai Traditional Rowing Race (30ft) will bring together elite sailors, captains, and boat owners not only from the UAE but also from GCC countries like Bahrain and Oman, along with various boats from institutions and private companies.

The organizing committee at the club has initiated preparations for this major event in coordination with government departments and national institutions. Registration procedures for participation are ongoing through the club’s website: www.dimc.ae , until Friday noon, prior to the announcement of the entry list.

In the current season, the club is hosting three rounds in the Dubai Championship 2023-2024. The inaugural round kicks off on Saturday, the 25th of November, followed by the second round two weeks later on Saturday, the 9th of December. Those who qualify will proceed to the final round of the Al Maktoum Cup scheduled for Saturday, the 23rd of December.

The Dubai Traditional Rowing Race 30ft commenced its inaugural season back in 1996-1997 as part of the vision of the late Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who conceived the idea for this category and various traditional marine races. The first race took place on the 7th of March 1997, featuring the participation of 15 boats. The boat Fatah Al-Ma’in 2, led by Khalifa Ali Al-Nazar, secured the first-place position.

Since the establishment of this category, the Dubai International Marine Club has organized multiple events to promote it extensively and encourage both the country's residents and enthusiasts to engage in the sport. The club has introduced several conditions to facilitate participation, particularly after introducing a new round for the open category for the first time in the 2021-2022 season.
