33rd Al Gaffal Race Sees High Registration Demand

Registration is ongoing for the 33rd Al Gaffal 60ft Traditional Dhow Sailing Race, which is being held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, from May 11th to May 19th. 

Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC) has annually organized the race since 1991, commencing from Sir Bu Na’air Island, passing through Moon Island, and concluding at the finish line on Dubai's shore, spanning over 50 nautical miles. This event commemorates the historical journeys of forefathers returning from pearl diving and fishing expeditions.

Registration for the upcoming 33rd Al Gaffal race was conducted via algaffal.ae, with 109 boats and sailors registered as of yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon. Notable participants in the competition include past champions such as Namran 211, the champion in 2023 and 2021; Hasheem 199, the champion in 2022; Ghazi 103, a five-time winner in 2004, 2006, 2013, 2015, and 2018; Al Shaqi 96, the champion in 2019; Al Raed 92, the champion in 2000; Serdal 83, the winner of 1996 and 1997; Barraq 33, the winner of 2014; Zilzal 25, the champion in 2010, 2016, and 2017; Atlas 12, the champion in 2007; and Al Qaffay 4, the champion in 2009.

Mohammed Abdullah Harib, Member of the 33rd Al Gaffal Higher Organizing Committee and Race Supervisor, commended the high demand for participation, affirming the race's significant importance to the people of the Emirates and enthusiasts of traditional sports. 

He explained that registration will close before the organizing committee's delegation departs for Sir Bu Nair Island. The Higher Organizing Committee is closely monitoring weather forecasts to determine the movement to the island. The club conducted an electronic survey among participants, receiving praise for everyone's response, indicating a promising and exceptional edition ahead.
