82 Boats Competing in the Dubai Traditional Dhow Sailing Race (60ft) Today

13 January 2024

The second round of the Dubai Traditional Dhow Sailing Race is set to commence at Dubai Shore this Saturday. Organized by the Dubai International Marine Club as part of the 2023-2024 sports season, the event aligns with the World Coolest Winter Campaign.

This race holds particular significance for boat owners, captains, and sailors, marking the inaugural competition of the new year, 2024. Additionally, it serves as the second round of the Dubai Championship in the 2023-2024 sports season and acts as a rehearsal in preparation for the 33rd Al Gaffal 60ft Traditional Dhow Sailing Race scheduled for April. This race will start from Sir Bu Nair Island and conclude at Dubai Shore.

Today's competition will feature 82 dhow boats that will hoist their white sails on the waters of the Arabian Gulf. As the race begins with the raising of the green flag, they will embark on a journey covering approximately 20 nautical miles from the depths of the Arabian Gulf towards the finish line in front of the iconic Burj Al Arab Hotel.

Mohammed Al Marri, the Director of the Sports Affairs Department & Race Director at the Dubai International Marine Club, mentioned that all preparations have been completed to ensure the success of the large and highly anticipated event. He expressed gratitude to the partners from government departments and national institutions who consistently support and stand behind the success of all events and races organized by the club.

Al Marri explained that the organizing committee at the Dubai International Marine Club is closely monitoring all reports regarding sea conditions and wind speeds. He noted that the marine bulletin forecasts ideal weather during the afternoon race, with appropriate wind speeds.

The Race Director expects a successful race, attributing it to the good preparation of the participating crews and their readiness to compete. Given the race's significance as the second round of the Dubai Traditional Dhow Sailing Race (60ft), the points earned will contribute to the overall championship standings at the end of the season. Additionally, this race marks the first event for this category in the year 2024.
