Green Initiatives of Dubai International Marine Club in 2023

28 December 2023

In 2023, the Dubai International Marine Club achieved significant milestones in line with the club’s strategic plan for 2021-2027. These accomplishments include endeavors to promote sustainability in the sports sector and contribute to the preservation of the environment and wildlife in water bodies through the organization of various environmental friendly races.

One of the club's notable achievements is receiving the Sustainability Award in the sports field during the ninth session of the Dubai Sports Excellence Model. This recognition is attributed to the club's commitment to sustainability in its operations, with 79% of its organized events being environmentally friendly races falling within special categories eligible for awards. This marks the first time in the categories of the 9th session of the Dubai Sports Excellence Model, adding another milestone to the club’s records since its founding in 1988.

The club's attainment of the Sustainability in Sports Award coincided with the UAE's declaration of 2023 as the "Year of Sustainability," under the slogan “Today for Tomorrow.” This initiative included various events and activities highlighting the UAE’s rich heritage in sustainable practices, raising awareness about environmental sustainability issues, and encouraging community participation in achieving sustainable development while supporting national strategies in this field.

In support of the recent Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (COP28) hosted by the United Arab Emirates in Expo City, Dubai, the Dubai International Marine Club, in collaboration with the UAE Modern Sailing and Rowing Federation, took the initiative to organize an exceptional environmental event. This gathering brought together an elite group, including sea enthusiasts and global rowing decision-makers, through a rowing boat parade at the heart of Dubai Marina Canal. The goal of the parade was to raise awareness about environmental preservation, sustainability, and climate issues.

The march conveyed a powerful message to the world, promoting 'Zero Carbon, Clean Water,' and garnering a commitment from participants to work towards its goals. It was attended by Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE Sailing and Rowing Federation, and esteemed Board Members - Mohammed Harib, CEO of DIMC, and Khaled Al Owais, Chairman of the Technical Committee. International dignitaries were also present, such as the French Olympic champion Jean-Christophe Rolland, President of World Rowing and a member of the International Olympic Committee, the Dutchman Rudy Van der Ween, President of Inland Waterways International, the Chinese Wang Shi, Honorary President of the Asian Rowing Federation and Founder of GCRA, Vincent Gaillard, Executive Director of World Rowing, Manal Bahman, Chief Operations Officer of Emirates Nature-WWF, and Ken Lee, International Ambassador and Co-Founder of GCRA.

On the other hand, the Victory Team department at the Dubai International Marine Club secured second place in the overall standings for the season at the UIM F1H2O World Powerboat Championship held in Sharjah, marking the fifth and final round of the 2023 World Championship. The Commerce and Tourism Development Authority organized tree-planting activities at Al Muntathir Reserve as part of Sharjah World Championships Week 2023, in collaboration with the global afforestation program for F1H2O Powerboats. The team actively participated by planting and cultivating 100 trees on the sidelines of the event.
