The organizing committee of the 34th Al Gaffal Race continues to receive daily registration forms for participation in the highly anticipated event, which is set to commence this Friday from Sir Bu Nair Island, culminating at the finish line off the Dubai shore.
The prestigious event is held under the patronage and support of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai. Organized annually by the Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC) since 1991, it reflects the enduring vision of its late founder, Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
On Friday, the Al Gaffal Race will bring together an elite fleet of owners, captains, and sailors competing aboard traditional 60ft sailing dhows, celebrating the deep-rooted maritime heritage of the UAE. This historic journey symbolizes the return of forefathers from pearl diving expeditions — a tribute to the past and the resilience of Emirati ancestors. Participants will embark on a journey of over 50 nautical miles, reenacting the historical return across the Arabian Gulf in pursuit of prosperity.
The event’s online registration portal has been vibrant with activity since registrations opened last week and will remain active until the final deadline. The organizing committee will depart for Sir Bu Nair Island on Wednesday to welcome the first arrivals and complete all participation procedures, including technical and safety inspections and the distribution of satellite tracking devices.
Since the announcement of registration, there has been a tremendous surge in participation, with the number of entrants expected to surpass previous editions. This strong turnout underscores the deep-rooted connection of the Emirati people to their maritime heritage and their ongoing commitment to participating in the Al Gaffal Race — a hallmark event of the marine sports season since its inception.
Today, Monday, the Dubai International Marine Club is finalizing all preparations and logistical arrangements in collaboration with key government entities and national institutions. The Club and the organizing committee are intensifying efforts across multiple sites to ready the vessels and yachts that will transport the committees and support teams, who are scheduled to begin their journey toward Sir Bu Nair Island on Wednesday.
Saif Juma Al Suwaidi, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Dubai International Marine Club and Vice Chairman of the Higher Organizing Committee for the 34th Al Gaffal Race, highlighted that the upcoming event is more than a competition — it is a vibrant festival that reflects the UAE’s strong ties to its past. He noted that the Committee has worked diligently to transform the event into a rich and diverse festivity featuring numerous activities celebrating this legacy.
“In the coming days, everyone will be immersed in the spirit of this grand carnival," Al Suwaidi said. "Our youth will set sail for Sir Bu Nair Island to participate, leaving their mark on the 34th edition by crafting a new chapter filled with dedication and cherished memories — adding to the race’s enduring legacy that has spanned more than three decades.”
Al Suwaidi concluded by extending his best wishes for success and safe arrival to all participants — including the organizing committees, dhow owners, captains, and sailors — as they embark on this remarkable journey next Friday. He emphasized that the safety and security of all participants remain the committee’s utmost priority.
