Sheikh Rashid bin Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum reviewed the ongoing preparations to ensure the success of the 34th Al Gaffal 60ft Traditional Dhow Sailing Race. This iconic race spans the distance from Sir Bu Nair Island to the shores of Dubai and is exclusively dedicated to the 60ft traditional dhow sailing category.
His Highness commended the continuous support and significant attention of the race’s patron, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai. His support has greatly contributed to the ongoing success and legacy of the highly anticipated annual event.
Sheikh Rashid bin Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum was briefed on the logistical and technical preparations for the historic race, which was launched in 1991 as an initiative by its founder, the late Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The event was envisioned as a legacy to be passed down through generations, celebrating the UAE's heritage. It has remained closely associated with the Dubai International Marine Club, the official organizer and supervisor of the race.
This update came during a meeting held in Zabeel with the delegation from the Higher Organizing Committee of the 34th Al Gaffal Race, which included Saif Juma Al Suwaidi, Vice Chairman of the Committee, along with Board Members Khalid bin Dasmal, Khalid Ali Al Balooshi, and Mohammed Abdullah Harib, Executive Director of the Dubai International Marine Club.
Sheikh Rashid bin Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum praised the efforts of the Board of Directors of the Dubai International Marine Club, the Higher Organizing Committee, and the Club’s partners from government departments and national institutions, who have consistently contributed to the success of the Al Gaffal Race for over three decades.
He was also updated on the plans for the 34th Al Gaffal Race Village, which will be constructed on the open beach in Umm Suqeim. The village will feature a variety of interactive and cultural pavilions that highlight the traditional maritime lifestyle of the forefathers, aiming to educate the public and celebrate the values and spirit of the race. The village will also host the closing ceremony and serve as the broadcasting hub for Dubai Sports Channels’ live coverage.
Discussions also addressed the comprehensive safety and logistical plans for the participants, including their transportation to Sir Bu Nair Island, pre-race preparations, and the journey of over 50 nautical miles to the finish line off the Dubai coast.
Sheikh Rashid bin Hamdan urged the Higher Organizing Committee to continue coordinating with partners to facilitate participation and overcome any challenges before and during the race. He extended his best wishes to all owners, captains, and sailors, hoping they reach the finish line safely on race day.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Sheikh Rashid bin Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum was presented with a commemorative gift by Saif Juma Al Suwaidi, in the presence of the committee members.
