Zilzal 77 Secures Second Victory in 22ft Dhow Sailing Race

Zilzal boat no. 77, owned by Marwan Abdullah Al Marzouqi and captained by his son Abdullah, secured the top position for the second consecutive time in the second and final round of the Dubai Traditional Dhow Sailing Race under the Youth category. 

Meanwhile, in the Junior Category, boat no. 76 Khadaa, owned by Sheikh Nasser bin Isa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and skippered by Saif Ali Mohammad Mayouf, clinched the first-place victory. The race took place last Friday afternoon on Jumeirah Beach in conjunction with the World Coolest Winter Campaign, marking the first event of the Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC) for the year 2024.

The event witnessed a large participation of sailors in both categories: youth (under 21 years old) and junior (under 16 years old). They all lined up at the starting point near the Palm Jumeirah before safely sailing towards the finish line on Jumeirah Beach, covering a race distance of more than 5 nautical miles.

The race progressed through various stages as sea conditions fluctuated, adding excitement and testing the skills of the young sailors in guiding their boats to the finish line. The boat no. 77, Zilzal, led the race and successfully achieved victory.

The race recorded a tough competition in the youth category between two brothers, Abdullah and Mohammed Marwan Al Marzouqi, who captained boats no. 77 Zilzal and Namram 81, respectively. Abdullah achieved first place, while his brother Mohammed came in second. The third place went to boat no. 32 Sultan Al Khair, owned by Nasser Sultan Al Marzouqi and led by Muhammad Saleh Jassim.

The junior category was won by boat no. 76 Khadaa, defeating its rival boat no. 49 Al Khayai owned by Muhammad Abdul Rahman Al Marzouqi and captained by Saif Khaled Al Marzouqi, who secured the second position. The third place was claimed by boat no. 145 Al Asifa, owned by Sultan Muhammad Al Marzouqi.

Mohammed Harib, DIMC Board Member and CEO, closely followed the race stages, while Mohammed Al Marri, the Director of the Sports Affairs Department at DIMC, presented the trophies to the top three positions in both the Junior and Youth Categories. The ceremony was witnessed by the parents of the sailors who attended the event.


Success 

Mohammed Al Marri, Director of the Sports Affairs Department at the Dubai International Marine Club, Race Director, praised the level of participation in the event and the great success of the race, which was distinguished by its tactical aspect, as the participants demonstrated the acquired skills that they learned to be future sailor.

Abdullah Marwan Abdullah Al Marzouqi, Sailor of the boat no. 77 Zilzal , expressed his great happiness at winning title in the second round of the 22ft Dubai Traditional Dhow Sailing Race for the second time in a row this season, indicating that the factors for winning were represented by the efforts of the crew and the directions of (his teacher) and his father, Marwan Al Marzouqi. He praise as well the organization of the DIMC for successfully choosing the date and route of the race, which helped everyone arrive safely.
