Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC) announced the opening of registration for the first round of the 43ft Dubai Traditional Dhow Sailing Race which is set to takes over Dubai Shore this Saturday, under the current sports season 2023-2024.
The organizing committee at DIMC encourages boat owners and sailors to participate in one of the oldest traditional Dhow Sailing Races through the club's website, www.dimc.ae , up until this Friday.
Rashid Thani Al Ail, a Board Member and Chairman of the Sports Committee at DIMC, extends a warm welcome to the racers as they gear up for the new sports season, which was launched last month with the inaugural round of the 22ft Dhow Sailing Race. He has confirmed that this new season includes a variety of sporting events for water sports enthusiasts, featuring approximately 10 races dedicated to traditional racing in various categories, including 22ft, 43ft, and 60ft Dhow Sailing Races.
Rashid also conveys his best wishes to all the participants for the upcoming race and expresses his hopes for the success of the organizing committee, which always engages with participants to gather valuable insights on how to enhance the race.

43ft Dubai Traditional Dhow Sailing Race represents one of the oldest categories in traditional races. The first official race in this category took place on 29 January 1988, coinciding with the establishment of the Dubai International Marine Club(DIMC). During that time, 19 boats participated in the inaugural race, with boat number 15 clinching the title.
Marine racing history records that the first two editions of the Al Gaffal Long Distance Race, in 1991 and 1992 was participated by 43ft Dhow boats and a joint race with 60ft Dhow Boats prior to fully shifting the Al Gaffal Race to a 60 footer dhow proving that it can withstand the wind and the waves from sailing to Sir Bu Na’air Island to Dubai Coast.
The registration closes today for the first round of the 43ft Dubai Traditional Dhow Sailing Race, organized by the Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC), as part of the new sports season 2023-2024.
DIMC is all set to host the grand race tomorrow, Saturday, 21st of October, departing from the depths of the Arabian Gulf Waters and heading towards the finish line near the iconic Burj Al Arab Hotel, covering a race distance of 14 nautical miles.
According to Mohammed Al Marri, Director of the Sports Affairs Department at DIMC, the race start time will be around 1:00 PM, considering the sea conditions and wind speeds. The preparations for the race will commence early, starting with the assembly point for the participants, followed by the positioning of the boats at the starting line before the Race Start.
Al Marri emphasized that the organizing committee is fully prepared for the event in coordination with the club's success partners from various government departments and national institutions. The committee has already communicated all the necessary procedures to all the participants, including details about the assembly point, start, and finish line via SMS. Participants are reminded as well to strictly adhere to the Race Instructions provided by the committee.
The Director of the Sports Affairs Department at the club also anticipates that the participating boats will cover a distance exceeding to 14 nautical miles between the start and finish line, taking advantage of the favorable weather conditions as per the marine forecast. These conditions will be conducive to the competition's nature, helping the sailors sail the fastest and most efficient route to the finish line.
He commended the response from sea enthusiasts who registered well in advance of today's deadline. Anticipating a significant turnout from boat owners and sailors, the committee will soon release the entry list of participants.

The race will start from the depths of the Arabian Gulf waters after one o'clock in the afternoon, considering the sea conditions and wind speeds. The starting point will be determined by the organizing committee at the Dubai International Marine Club, where the boats will hoist their white sails and head toward the finish line on the beaches of Umm Suqeim, opposite the iconic Burj Al Arab Hotel, passing by the World Islands and Palm Jumeirah Island.
The registration for the race witnessed a large turnout, with the organizing committee confirming the participation of 75 boats that will sail along Dubai's shore for more than 14 nautical miles.
The race organizing committee met with boat owners and sailors in an online meeting yesterday, led by the presence of Mohammed Al Marri, Director of the Sports Affairs Department at the DIMC. They discussed the starting line procedures and exchanged views for the success of the upcoming race.
Al Marri praised the great cooperation and positive spirit of this meeting. He sensed a strong desire and enthusiasm for the success of the anticipated sporting event today, indicating that everyone agreed on all the points that would contribute to making the race a successful one.

It's worth noting that boat no. 55, Al Teber, led by sailor Mohammed Sohail Al Muhairi, was crowned first in the overall standings of the Dubai Traditional Dhow Sailing Race (43ft) for the 2022-2023 sports season. Following closely behind is boat no. 87, Al Dhafrah, skippered by Mohammed Abdullah Juma Al Marzouki, in second place, and the third-place honor goes to boat no. 70, Nazaa, skippered by Yousef Ahmed Mohammed Al Hammadi.

Dahis boat no. 63, owned by Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the National Media Office and led by the young sailor Issa Sultan Al Marzouqi, was crowned the champion of the 43ft Dubai Traditional Dhow Sailing Race, marking the first round of the Dubai Championship season 2023-2024. The event was successfully organized by the Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC) with the participation of 80 boats.
The second place was secured by boat no. 96, Al Shaqi, owned by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, and skippered by Khalaf Butti Mosbeh Al-Ghasheesh Al-Marri. The third place went to the crew of boat no. 170, Sahm, owned by Abdullah Ibrahim Abdullah Al Hammadi, and captained by Ahmed Youssef Salem Al Hammadi.
The event was marked by significant organizational success, taking place under ideal conditions. It commenced at the starting point in the depths of the Arabian Gulf waters, with wind speeds ranging between 8-12 knots, heading towards the finish line near the iconic Burj Al Arab Hotel. The race covered more than 14 nautical miles, and the race organizing committee ensured a tight control over the course to ensure the safety of all participants.
As the race concluded, the awarding ceremony for the top winners was held in the presence of Mohammed Harib, the CEO of the Dubai International Marine Club, along with Mohammed Al Marri, Director of the Sports Affairs Department and Race Director. They presented the trophies and prizes to the top three finishers: "Dahis 63," "Al Shaqi 96," and "Sahm 170." The podium atmosphere was filled with joy and happiness from the sailors and boat crews.
Harib commended the substantial participation and attendance in the initial rounds of the 43ft Dubai Traditional Dhow Sailing Race Championship, marking the beginning of major races in traditional sports. He emphasized that the spirit displayed by everyone indicates a promising start for a successful season.
Furthermore, Mohammed Harib praised the dedication of the organizing committee at the club for their meticulous oversight of the race and expressed his appreciation for the continuous support from government and national entities that have consistently contributed to the success of all the club's event. These entities include the General Command of Dubai Police, Dubai Coast Guard, Dubai Civil Defense, and Dubai Media Incorporated, represented by Dubai Sports TV (as the media partner) and P&O Marina.

The sailor, Marwan Abdullah Al Marzouqi, dedicated the victory of the boat no.63 Dahis to the team sponsor, Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the National Media Office, for his continuous support. He emphasized that as a team, they always strive for podium finishes and praised the performance of the team's boats, along with the success of the young sailor, Issa Sultan Al Marzouqi, in the race.
Marwan stated that the team, which includes a group of boats, successfully adopted an appropriate and successful strategy that led them to secure victory, with boat no. 63 Dahis being crowned as the champion. He pointed out that this marks a wonderful start to a successful season, especially since the team's boats achieved success at the beginning of the season in the 22ft Dubai Traditional Dhow Sailing Race, with boat no. 77 'Zilzal' winning the title.
