Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC) is set to host the second round of the Dubai Traditional Rowing Race - 30ft on Saturday, the 9th of December, during the current marine sports season 2023-2024.
The event is anticipated to attract participation from over 40 boats, competing for top positions in the second round. The competition is divided into two parts: the first half is designated for the local class for the country's nationals, while the second half is for the open class for the boats coming from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC Countries), as well as teams representing Government Departments, National Institutions, and Private Companies.
The upcoming race is the final opportunity for all boats to improve their positions in the general ranking, securing a top spot among the contenders for the title in the 26th edition of the Al Maktoum Cup Traditional Rowing Race, scheduled on the 23rd of this month.
The race will cover a distance of more than 2 km in the Dubai Water Canal, running along the walkway of the Al Jaddaf area, providing stunning views of the Business Bay skyline, Burj Khalifa, and Dubai Creek Harbor near the Wildlife Sanctuary.
Registration for participation in the Traditional Rowing Race 30ft (the second round of the Dubai Championship 2023-2024), organized by the Dubai International Marine Club, closes today (Friday) as part of the current sports season.
At the beginning of the week, the organizing committee at the Dubai International Marine Club announced the commencement of the major race and opened participation for those wishing to take part in this eagerly anticipated challenge. The race serves as the final qualifying stage for the Al Maktoum Cup, the most prestigious tournament, scheduled for the twenty-third of this month.
It is expected that the enlightenment meeting will be held this morning (Friday) between the organizing committee and the participants, where they will discuss the race instructions and respond to all inquiries related to the event scheduled to begin on Saturday at three o'clock in the afternoon.
Mohammed Al Marri, Director of the Sports Affairs Department at the Dubai International Marine Club, has announced that the anticipated race will take place on the Dubai Water Canal, covering a distance of more than 2.5 km. The racecourse will showcase iconic landmarks such as the Burj Khalifa, Business Bay, and Dubai Marina, situated on the opposite side of Al Jadaf Walk, near the Dubai Creek & Wildlife Sanctuary.
Al Marri further explained that the upcoming event will bring together over 40 boats competing in two categories. The first category, known as the local class, will feature the elite captains and owners in the country. The second category, referred to as the open class, is dedicated to boats from the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, as well as the teams of government departments, institutions, and private companies.
The Director of the Sports Affairs Department emphasized that the upcoming race represents the final opportunity for all boats to improve their positions in the general ranking list. This is crucial for securing a place among the top 20 elite boats that will compete in the 26th edition of the Al Maktoum Cup Traditional Rowing Race.

It is worth noting that the Dubai International Marine Sports Club has approved the final results of the Dubai Traditional Rowing Race - Heat 1 after reviewing the jury's reports and technical inspection. The results of the (local) half were amended, declaring boat no. 36 Al Asifa, owned by Hamdan Saeed Jaber and captained by Badr Abdul Hakim Mohammed Thani, as the champion of the round. The boat Wadi Sahm 2, owned by Sheikh Maktoum bin Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi and captained by Mohammed Salem Al Kindi, secured the second place, while the boat Balbala 43, owned by Ahmed Darwish Mohammed Saeed and captained by Marzouk Salem Sorour, came in third place.

This great heritage marine event will bring together 450 sailors on board in 49 boats, competing for the title against the stunning backdrop of Dubai Water Canal. The racecourse will feature iconic landmarks such as the Burj Khalifa, Business Bay, and Dubai Marina, situated on the opposite side of Al Jadaf Walk, near the Dubai Creek & Wildlife Sanctuary.
The race will embody the past of their forefathers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), including participants from the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Sultanate of Oman over the three rounds this season, with the Al Maktoum Cup as the final round.
The participating boat will be divided into half wherein the first half is for the local class run which is for the nationals and the second half is for the open class run which is for the GCC countries along with various teams from government department, national institutions, and private companies.
The second round holds special importance for all the participating boats, as they aim to earn points qualifying them to enter the Al Maktoum Cup, the most prestigious rowing race which is on its twenty-seventh edition to be held on the 23rd of this month.
The schedule begins today at the race site with the technical inspection procedures, racers briefing & race draw prior to proceeding to start line for the start of the race at three o’clock in the afternoon.
It's worth noting that the first round of the Dubai Traditional Rowing Race - 30ft was won by boat no. 36, Asifa, owned by Hamdan Saeed Jaber and led by Badr Abdul Hakim Muhammad Thani, securing first place in the open round. Meanwhile, the Bahraini boat KHK, owned by His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa and skippered by Ahmed Al Busmait, claimed the top spot in the open half.

Mohammed Harib, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai International Marine Club, welcomed the participants to the Dubai Traditional Rowing Race (30ft), which is entering its twenty-eighth season since its initial launch in the 1996-1997 season. This race is a translation of the visions of the late Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Throughout these years, the club has been keen, thanks to the efforts of its team and cooperation with partners, owners, and racers, to continue and develop the race.

In the current season, the club is hosting three rounds in the Dubai Championship 2023-2024. The inaugural round is set to kick off on tomorrow, the 25th of November, followed by the second round two weeks later ,on Saturday the 9th of December. Qualifying participants will proceed to the final round at the Al Maktoum Cup, scheduled on the 23rd of December.

The Dubai Traditional Rowing Race 30ft commenced its inaugural season back in 1996-1997 as part of the vision of the late Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who conceived the idea for this category and various traditional marine races. The first race took place on the 7th of March 1997, featuring the participation of 15 boats. The boat Fatah Al-Ma’in 2, led by Khalifa Ali Al-Nazar, secured the first-place position.
Since the establishment of this category, the Dubai International Marine Club has organized multiple events to promote it extensively and encourage both the country's residents and enthusiasts to engage in the sport. The club has introduced several conditions to facilitate participation, particularly after introducing a new round for the open category for the first time in the 2021-2022 season.
The boat Atlas 39, owned by Hamdan Saeed Jaber and captained by Hassan Ibrahim Al Hosani, was crowned the champion of the Dubai Traditional Rowing Race – Heat 2 for the Local Class Run Category. Meanwhile, the boat Shabab Suhar from the Oman Marine Sports Committee, led by Ibrahim Saleh bin Rashid Al Ghaiti, secured the first place in the second half for the Open Class Category.
The race was successfully organized by the Dubai International Marine Club on the waters of Dubai Water Canal in the Al Jaddaf area, with participation from more than 400 sailors on board 36 boats. They competed in two categories: local and open class, covering a race distance of more than 2.3 kilometers.
In the Local Class Run category, participated in by 25 boats, the Atlas 39 secured the first position against its top competitor, Boat No. 35 Al Kous, owned by Ali Ahmed Khamis Al Noun, who came in second place. The third position went to Boat No. 36 Al Asifa, owned by Hamdan Saeed Jaber and skippered by Bader Abdul Hakim Mohammed Thani.
In the open class category, the competitions resulted in the emergence of a new champion, the crew of the Omani boat Shabab Suhar 22, which beat the first-round champion, the Bahraini boat KHK 54, owned by His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa and captained by Ahmed Bin Nasser Al Busmait. They came in second place, while the boat Ahed Oman 44, affiliated with the Oman Marine Sports Committee and led by Saoud Humaid Al Bahri, took third place.
Right after the race concluded, the awarding ceremony for the top three places in each category was held in the presence of Mohammed Harib, Chief Executive Officer of the Dubai International Marine Club, accompanied by Colonel Ali Abdullah Al Naqbi from the Dubai Police, and Mohammed Al Marri, the Race Director. They handed over the cups to the winners of the local and open class run amid the joy and happiness of the boat owners and sailors.
